What to organize first

  1. Assigned stage

List modeling, detailing, checking, and revision responsibilities separately.

  2. Revision timeline

Record the date and source of changed instructions alongside the relevant review milestone.

  3. File boundaries

Identify original design records by location and general description rather than exporting them.

Start with the work you actually do

Prepare detailed working diagrams of machinery and mechanical devices, including dimensions, fastening methods, and other engineering information.

O*NET classifies this occupation as Mechanical Drafters (17-3013.00). Its description covers a typical occupation, not every workplace or individual job. It does not establish employee status, overtime eligibility or employer misconduct.

May 2025 wage estimates by state

Compare your pay records with published BLS estimates for Mechanical Drafters (SOC 17-3013). These describe an occupation across employers. They are not a required pay rate, an overtime calculation, or evidence of discrimination or unpaid wages.

Select your work state to see its published pay range. No personal pay information is requested or sent.

The 25th and 75th percentiles mark the middle half of the estimated wage distribution; the median is its midpoint. Actual pay can differ with experience, employer, location and duties. Hourly and annual figures are shown as published, without converting one into the other.

“Not published” preserves unavailable or suppressed source cells. “Above reporting limit” preserves a top-coded source value without inventing a number. A missing state estimate does not establish service eligibility. The data describe wage and salary employment; they do not measure self-employment income.

Identify the drafting stage

Describe whether you created a model, detailed an existing concept, checked a drawing, or incorporated an approved revision. Note the project period and who supplied the requirements. Distinguish your drafting responsibility from engineering decisions or final approvals assigned to others.

Track revisions and review expectations

Record when requirements or review comments changed and how they affected your assigned deliverable. If a performance concern involves a drawing, identify its general type and revision date. Avoid using a later version to describe what was available during an earlier review.

Leave design files in their approved location

Do not transfer CAD models, full drawing packages, customer specifications, or proprietary dimension data to a personal account. Preserve your own employment and assignment notices when permitted. A chronology can identify the authorized system holding a relevant revision without reproducing its contents.

Choose your next step

Review the workplace retaliation guide, unpaid wages guide, or discrimination guide if those concerns fit your experience. A job title alone does not establish a claim.
