Surveyor Workplace Records Guide

Surveyors may gather measurements, check calculations and prepare descriptions through separate field and office stages. A workplace account should identify your assigned scope and the version under review without making an independent claim about a property boundary.

What to organize first

  1. Scope boundary

List the field and office tasks assigned to you and any later additions.

  2. Access limitation

Record when a site or reference-information restriction was reported and how it changed the work plan.

  3. Certification role

Separate your measurements or drafting from the person responsible for final review and certification.

Start with the work you actually do

Make exact measurements and determine property boundaries. Provide data relevant to the shape, contour, gravitation, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features on or near the earth's surface for engineering, mapmaking, mining, land evaluation, construction, and other purposes.

O*NET classifies this occupation as Surveyors (17-1022.00). Its description covers a typical occupation, not every workplace or individual job. It does not establish employee status, overtime eligibility or employer misconduct.

May 2025 wage estimates by state

Compare your pay records with published BLS estimates for Surveyors (SOC 17-1022). These describe an occupation across employers. They are not a required pay rate, an overtime calculation, or evidence of discrimination or unpaid wages.

Select your work state to see its published pay range. No personal pay information is requested or sent.

The 25th and 75th percentiles mark the middle half of the estimated wage distribution; the median is its midpoint. Actual pay can differ with experience, employer, location and duties. Hourly and annual figures are shown as published, without converting one into the other.

“Not published” preserves unavailable or suppressed source cells. “Above reporting limit” preserves a top-coded source value without inventing a number. A missing state estimate does not establish service eligibility. The data describe wage and salary employment; they do not measure self-employment income.

Establish the survey assignment

Record the project type, general work area and deliverables assigned to you. Note unavailable access, reference material or equipment reported before fieldwork. Keep a later expansion of scope separate from the original measurement task.

Trace checks and revisions

Describe when field information was submitted, who checked it and what revision was requested. Distinguish a measurement correction from a changed client instruction or additional investigation. Record who had authority to certify the finished work.

Protect property and project information

Do not remove confidential deeds, client maps, field databases or restricted coordinates. Use your own schedule and permitted employment messages. Identify the relevant survey version and custodian so an authorized reviewer can locate it.

Choose your next step

Review the workplace retaliation guide, unpaid wages guide, or discrimination guide if those concerns fit your experience. A job title alone does not establish a claim.
